Janani Suraksha Yojana 2023: Support for Pregnant Women and Newborns

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has initiated the Janani Suraksha Yojana to help pregnant women in our country. This scheme aims to enhance the well-being of pregnant women and newborns. Only women below the poverty line can benefit from it, and they must apply through the official website.

There are two categories of pregnant women covered by this scheme:

Rural Areas: Pregnant women in rural areas, living below the poverty line, will receive financial aid of ₹1400 during delivery. ASHA associates will receive an additional ₹300 for encouraging deliveries and another ₹300 for post-delivery services.

Urban Areas: Pregnant women in urban areas will receive ₹1000 in financial assistance during delivery. Asha Sahayogs will get ₹200 as a delivery incentive, and ₹200 for providing post-delivery services.

Low Performing States:

Cash Assistance in Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) Based on Area and Performance

Urban Areas:

  • Low-Performing States: Women receive ₹1000, and Asha workers get ₹200.
  • High-Performing States: Women get ₹600, and Asha workers still receive ₹200.

Rural Areas:

  • Low-Performing States: Women are given ₹1400, while Asha workers receive ₹600.

Key Information about Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY)

Initiation Date: This scheme started on April 12, 2005.

Operational Scope: JSY works all across India, including every state and union territory. The Central Government manages it.

Targeted States: Specific focus is on states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Odisha, and Jammu and Kashmir.

Requirements: Beneficiaries need both JSY and MCH cards to access the scheme.

Features of Janani Suraksha Yojana 2023

Nationwide Implementation: JSY is active in all states and union territories, with a primary focus on improving healthcare in underperforming states like Bihar, Odisha, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Chhattisgarh.

Card Requirements: Every beneficiary must possess a Janani Suraksha Yojana card along with an MCH card.

Central Funding: This scheme is fully funded by the central government and provides cash assistance.

ASHA Recognition: ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) is a recognized part of the scheme.

Home Birth Support: Women delivering children at home with the help of Anganwadi or ASHA doctors receive ₹500.

Vaccination Outreach: After childbirth, mothers and children are informed about five years of free vaccinations.

Ante-natal Checkups: Women registered under JSY 2023 are entitled to at least two free ante-natal checkups, with support provided by ASHA and Anganwadi workers in the post-delivery period.

Monitoring of the Program:

  • Monthly meetings at sub-center level to oversee the scheme.
  • Regular gatherings on the third Friday of each month; if it’s a holiday, the meeting takes place the following day.

Roles of Asha and Health Workers:

  • Identifying and registering beneficiaries.
  • Assisting women in obtaining essential documents.
  • Supporting beneficiaries in the last three Ante-Natal Care (ANC) checkups.
  • Identifying government health centers and accredited private health institutes.
  • Encouraging institution-based childbirth.
  • Facilitating newborn vaccination up to 14 weeks.
  • Reporting child and maternal births or deaths to ANMs or MOs.
  • Monitoring the health of mothers.
  • Promoting family planning.

Low-Performing States:

  • Women delivering in government health centers or accredited private institutions.
  • Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe women proposed through government health centers or accredited private institutions.

High-Performing States:

  • Women living below the poverty line.
  • Women above 19 years of age.
  • Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe women proposed through government health centers or accredited private institutions.
