1. Assess the Situation Quickly

Before rushing to help, take a moment to assess the situation for potential dangers. Ensure the area is safe for you to approach. If the scene is hazardous—like a fire, live electricity, or traffic—call for emergency services immediately.

2. The Three P’s of First Aid

Remember the three P’s:

  • Preserve life: Your main goal is to keep the injured person alive.

  • Prevent the condition from worsening: Take steps to stop further harm.

  • Promote recovery: Provide comfort and support until professional help arrives.

3. Handling Cuts and Bleeding

  • Minor Cuts: Clean the wound with water and apply an antiseptic. Cover with a sterile bandage.

  • Severe Bleeding: Apply firm pressure with a clean cloth to stop the bleeding. If blood soaks through, add more cloth without removing the original. Seek medical help urgently.

4. Burns and Scalds

  • Cool the burn under running water for at least 10 minutes. Avoid ice, butter, or creams, which can cause more damage.

  • Cover with a non-stick, sterile dressing and seek medical attention for severe burns.

5. Choking

  • Adults and Children Over 1 Year: Perform the Heimlich maneuver—stand behind the person, wrap your arms around their waist, and give quick, inward and upward thrusts just above the belly button.

  • Infants Under 1 Year: Lay them face down on your forearm, supporting their head, and give up to five back slaps between the shoulder blades.

6. CPR Basics

If someone is unresponsive and not breathing:

  • Call emergency services immediately.

  • Perform chest compressions: Push hard and fast in the center of the chest, allowing it to rise completely between compressions. Aim for 100-120 compressions per minute.

  • Rescue breaths (if trained): After 30 compressions, give 2 breaths. Continue the cycle until help arrives.

7. Sprains and Fractures

  • R.I.C.E Method: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Apply ice to reduce swelling, wrap the area snugly (not too tight), and elevate it above heart level. Seek medical attention for suspected fractures.

8. Recognizing a Stroke: FAST

  • F – Face: Ask them to smile. Is one side drooping?

  • A – Arms: Can they lift both arms evenly?

  • S – Speech: Is their speech slurred or strange?

  • T – Time: Act quickly and call emergency services.

9. Stock a First Aid Kit

Ensure your first aid kit includes:

  • Adhesive bandages, sterile gauze, and tape

  • Antiseptic wipes and antibiotic ointment

  • Scissors, tweezers, and gloves

  • Pain relievers and a CPR mask

  • Emergency contact numbers

10. Stay Calm and Reassure

Your calm demeanor can help soothe the injured person. Speak clearly, offer reassurance, and keep them as comfortable as possible until help arrives.
