The abacus is a traditional method for mastering basic math operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, which are the fundamental building blocks of Mathematics. When a child becomes proficient in these calculations and numbers, they are less likely to fear the subject of Math, leading to a significant increase in their self-assurance. The abacus employs this secret, and when taught by an expert, it turns numbers into a child’s closest companion.
The majority of parents might not be aware of this fascinating fact, but Abacus is a tried-and-true brain-development technique that significantly improves concentration and focus. Because of this, children can perform calculations mentally (without the use of paper and pen) and, once they reach higher levels, are frequently referred to as human calculators.
Abacus Training Methodology
Before enrolling your child in Mathcruise’s online abacus classes, it’s important to understand what the abacus is and how it enhances concentration.
· An abacus is a physical tool that has beads on it. Children can represent different numbers by moving the beads around according to the rules they learn from their abacus teacher.
· The next stage after teaching a child how to represent numbers with a physical tool is to have them do the same using visualization, which is commonly referred to as air-brushing.
· The visualisation technique is fundamental to the Abacus because the child imagines and builds a mental image of a physical tool, and for each calculation step, he moves the beads in his mental image to represent the answer, storing the new image.
· As soon he positions the beads for last step, he immediately interprets the number and is able to provide the answer.
Lets learn with a simple example
Question 3 + 5 + 7
Step1: Child imagines the tool in the default position
Step2: When we tell him the first number as 3, he mentally moves the beads to represent number 3 as shown in image below
Step3: When we ask the child to add 5 as a next step, he applies the Abacus formula (that he would have learnt in his Abacus classes) to add 5 to the earlier number, and creates the following image in his mind
Step4: When we ask the child to add 7 as a next step, he applies the Abacus formula (that he would have learnt in his Abacus classes) to add 7 to the earlier number, and creates the following image in his mind
The last image shown above actually represents the result, which is “15” in our case. So the child is able to instantly provide the answer as 15, since at every step he has the answer ready based on the image of Abacus Tool.
How does Abacus Improve Your Child’s Math Skills
Strong logical reasoning abilities and lightning-fast speed are prerequisites for success in math so that you can complete your exams on time and with accuracy. Abacus helps develop both these key aspects in the child, lets understand how.
Super fast calculation speed
A child who has mastered the art of Abacus behaves like a human calculator, as we have already seen above. To truly believe this phenomenon for the first time, you must witness it in person. Visit our Mathcruise video gallery page for demo of our amazing students.
Strong Logical reasoning skills
Since the Hand-Eye-Ear Coordination Technique is the foundation of the abacus, it also greatly aids in brain development. Should you witness a child performing mathematical computations through visualization (visit our video gallery section and explore this topic further on our website), you will observe that the child makes a finger movement with each step. Essentially, the finger movement is used to alter the position of the beads, which stand in for the numbers (he is merely mentally placing the tool image there rather than using the actual tool).
Abacus classes for Kids — Additional benefits
Abacus provides numerous other benefits (the list is long and amazong) and hence is a strongly recommended course for all children in the age of 5–15 years. Some of these additional benefits re mentioned below for your reference:
· Boost self confidence
· Boost concentration
· Much higher speed as well as accuracy to do all arithmetic calculations mentally, without a paper and pen
· Boost listening skills and thus helps the child to do much better and quality conversations
· Continuous brain development since Abacus works on a technique that stimulates the brain via air-brushing and visualization methods
· Removes fear of Maths from children’s mind
· Develops photogenic memory
Conclusion
To bestow upon your child a lifelong gift of self-assurance, enrol him in an Abacus program taught by a qualified Abacus teacher. Expect no immediate results and be ready to invest at least six months. Your child will have a distinct advantage over peers and be able to master math for the rest of his life if you are patient and put in the necessary effort.
