The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has embarked on an exciting venture, inviting aspiring minds to join its latest initiative – the ‘ISRO Robotics Challenge-URSC 2024 (IRoC-U 2024).’ 

With a compelling cash prize of ₹5 lakhs for the winning team, this challenge beckons innovators to showcase their brilliance in designing robotic rovers destined for missions to celestial bodies. The challenge aims to explore novel avenues in space missions, specifically focusing on lunar and planetary exploration.

Commencement and Registrations

Commencing from November 20 and concluding on December 15, 2023, the challenge’s registration window opens the door for enthusiastic individuals keen on contributing to space exploration. Hosted by ISRO’s U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), the challenge is an open call for youth to present groundbreaking concepts and designs in space robotics.

The foundation of this initiative, aptly tagged ‘Let’s build a space robot,’ was laid on November 8, 2023, marking the beginning of an exciting journey into the realms of space technology innovation.

What are the Objectives and Focus?

The primary objectives of this challenge are manifold. It seeks to establish a standardized platform for delving into the realm of space robotics, fostering skills such as communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and adaptability among participants. Notably, the challenge aims to co-develop futuristic technologies vital for space exploration, bridging the gap between academia, industry, and ISRO.

Learning Curve and Development

Furthermore, the programme is a learning curve for students, enabling them to confront and resolve intricate engineering challenges by applying scientific principles and engineering expertise. It equips participants with the ability to devise solutions meeting specific requirements, enhancing their communication, teamwork, and leadership skills while establishing and attaining goals effectively.

Rewards and Recognition

The competition’s rewards are not merely a financial incentive but a recognition of exceptional talent. Three winning teams, evaluated by an expert jury panel and based on their fair play attitude, stand to receive substantial prizes – ₹5 lakhs for the first place, ₹3 lakhs for the second, and ₹2 lakhs for the third. Additionally, two participants will be awarded a consolation prize of ₹1 lakh each for their commendable efforts.

The climax of this exhilarating journey is set for August 5-6, 2023, which will witness the ISRO Robotics Challenge Day, showcasing the impressive innovations and accomplishments of the participating teams.
