What is a Concussion?


A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that alters the way the brain functions. It is caused by a blow or jolt to the head that causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce or twist which stretches and damages the brain cells and creates chemical changes in the brain.

Signs and Symptoms


The signs and symptoms of a Concussion can be physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep-related. Some common signs noticed by others include:

– Appearing dazed or stunned
– Confusion or being unsure of what happened
– Clumsiness or lack of coordination
– Slow or slurred speech
– Loss of consciousness (knocked out) for a short time.

Some common symptoms reported by the person with the concussion include:

– Headache or pressure in the head
– Nausea or vomiting
– Balance problems or dizziness
– Double or blurry vision
– Sensitivity to light or noise
– Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy or groggy
– Concentration or memory problems
– Irritability or more emotional
