  • A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India
  1. Age Limit

The age criteria for UPSC 2023 varies based on the different categories:

  • General Category: You must be between 21 and 32 years old as of August 1, 2023.
  • OBC (Other Backward Classes): You can avail of a relaxation of up to 3 years, making the maximum age limit 35 years.
  • SC/ST (Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes): You can avail of a relaxation of up to 5 years, making the maximum age limit 37 years.
  • Defense Services Personnel: If you are an ex-serviceman with at least five years of military service, you can receive an age relaxation of up to 5 years.
  • Persons with Benchmark Disabilities: If you fall under this category, the maximum age limit can be extended by 10 years for General, 13 years for OBC, and 15 years for SC/ST candidates.
  1. Educational Qualifications

To be eligible for the UPSC 2023 examination, you must possess at least one of the following educational qualifications:

  • A degree from a recognized university incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a university under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.
  • A degree obtained through correspondence or distance education.
  • A degree from an open university.
  • A qualification recognized by the Government of India as equivalent to the above.
  1. Number of Attempts

The number of attempts allowed for the UPSC examination also follows a category-based approach:

  • General Category: You can attempt the exam a maximum of 6 times.
  • OBC Category: You have a maximum of 9 attempts available.
  • SC/ST Category: There is no fixed limit on the number of attempts until the age limit is exceeded.
